CME CONTENT INSTRUCTIONS

ACCME’s Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education

Accredited providers of CME by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) require that presenters comply with the ACCME’s Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education as well as the provisions of the federal statutes concerning acceptance of grant funds from industry.

As a faculty member, you are required to do the following:

  • Disclose any and all personal financial interest or relationship that you have with any ineligible company within 24 months. The ACCME defines an ineligible company as “those whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients.”

  • Design content that is independent, objective, scientifically rigorous, balanced and free of commercial bias.

  • Assure that scientific studies utilized or referenced in your presentation are from sources acceptable to the scientific and medical community.

  • Patient care recommendations are acceptable to the medical community, are based on evidence acceptable to the profession, and do not recommend any unscientific modalities or those not supported by evidenced based sources.

  • Not accept auxiliary funds from the supporters of this activity related to your work as our faculty; please advise us if you are contacted by an ineligible company in this regard.

Content Validation

To comply with more intense scrutiny required by accreditation agencies, the CME provider has developed a Policy on Content Validation. A reviewer will assess the content (PowerPoint slides, manuscript and handout materials, etc.) for three metrics: (1) fair balance, (2) the scientific objectivity of studies mentioned in the materials or used as the basis for content, and (3) appropriateness of patient care recommendations made to learners. If there are concerns identified by the reviewer, you will be contacted about these concerns for potential revisions.

Guidelines

Please adhere to the following guidelines when developing your presentation:

  • All recommendations involving clinical medicine in a CME/CE activity must be based on evidence that is accepted with the profession of medicine as adequate justification for their indications and contraindications in the care of patients.

  • Please provide references in support of your discussion and CME/CE presentation content. Study results and information presented must be based on sound evidence and use of scientific methods generally accepted by the medical community.

  • The CME/CE presentation content should be objective, balanced and free of commercial bias.

  • When possible, address any barriers faced by the learner that may inhibit their ability to implement the strategy suggested by the CME/CE presentation content. If you are able, suggest strategies to remove, overcome or address the barriers to change.

  • When discussing therapeutic options, please use only generic names; if it is necessary to use a trade name, then those of several companies must be used.

  • If the material is introducing is a new product or treatment modality or which there no others to compare, then alternate treatment options should be included.

  • The content of your discussion should not be modified or influenced by representation of industry or other financial contributors. You may, however, use scientific data generated from industry-sponsored research.

  • All scientific research referred to, reported or used in CME/CE in support or justification of a patient-care recommendation must conform to the generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection and analysis.

  • The content of such CME/CE must not promote recommendations, treatments or manners of practicing medicine that are known to have risks or dangers that outweigh the benefits or are known to be ineffective in the treatment of patients.

  • No funds should be accepted by the faculty/content developer in relation to this CME/CE activity outside of the funds paid by the joint provider.

  • Please disclose any discussion of off-label or investigational uses of commercial products.

  • While finalizing your presentation, please keep the time limit in mind. This will be strictly enforced in order to stay on schedule.

  • Please bring a backup copy of your presentation with you to the meeting in the event there are any technical difficulties encountered with your slides/videos onsite.
